Episode 1: Ways to Say Hello
Ada goes to her first day of school. Nervous to make new friends Ms. Mindi helps guide her and her classmates on ways to say hello.
Meet The Creatures
Meet ADA
Ada has autism and Epilepsy.
When people first meet Ada all they see is a shy, quiet, little creature. Ada doesn’t exchange conversation verbally, but she participates and communicates through other ways. She is very happy and she loves her friends. And she expresses it without saying anything at all. If you don't take the time to get to know her, it would be an absolute oversight on your part! Because when when you look at who she is and how she experiences Creature’s Corner you can see how true curiosity can be inspiring (like Ada!).
Sook has autism and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).
“Choo, Choo! Sook is here! All board!”
“Did you know trains are powered by a locomotive? Did you know a locomotive is also called an engine?”
When it comes to trains, there’s nothing that Sook can’t tell you. They love making friends just as much as they love trains.
Sook can get uncomfortable when there’s tension or conflict and they become blunt and say what they think without filters. They don’t read personal space cues well. Sook loves people, though, and wants to be friends with everyone.
Meet Sook
Meet TY
Ty has autism and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
“I’m Ty! I’m quick. Time me!”
Ty loves to be first. First in line. First to finish. And first to stick to the rules. He likes being timed with tasks. The set time frames and boundaries help him know what's expected and what to do. He loves to help coordinate and keep others on task. Even though he’s trying to be helpful, he doesn’t understand how others may need exceptions to the rule. Ty is learning how to cope with his frustrations and big emotions.
Meet Drago
Drago has autism and Cerebral Palsy.
“What can smell without a noise? A fart! Pfftttttt!”
Drago is charming and mischievous. He loves telling jokes and playing pranks. His favorite joke is telling people it’s his birthday when it’s not. A real prank, non-prank! He loves to exaggerate and tell stories. He’s smart, funny, creative, and a little bit crude at times. Drago has a wheelchair to help him be mobile and a computer to help him communicate. He seems slimey to those who may not know him. To those who know him best, he’s loving and wants to be loved. He finds love through attention.
Meet Myla
Myla has autism and Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID).
“Let’s play pretend!”
The creative mind within Myla is colorful and limitless! She can memorize and recite stories verbatim. She loves to be different characters and understands the world around her through creating stories and mimicking the shows she watches. This can be beautiful and delightful, but there are times when she watches cartoons with her dad and the mimicking can get aggressive.
Meet Ms. Mindi
Ms. Mindi is a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT).
“Good morning, class.”
Miss Mindi loves her students. She’s grateful for the experiences she gets to share and the time she gets to spend with them. She’s generous and patient. Understanding when to be curious, when to set boundaries, and when to be stern has helped her teaching. She’s the calm presence in the controlled chaos. When Miss Mindi was a kid, she felt like the weird one—isolated and misunderstood. Miss Mindi wants to be the person she never had. One who sees the beauty and the uniqueness in every little creature of Creature’s Corner.
